Materials: ink on paper
"Galileo had already asserted that only those properties of matter that are directly mean amenable to mathematical measurement such as size shape and weight are real the other more subjective qualities such as sound taste and color are merely illusory impressions since the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics alone"
In this work, I started with the a math theorem that is seen in painting especially in the renaissance era. From there as o continued to read I let the pen create what my mind wandered to. Although we hate to admit it, math is prevalent in all art, even if it is just the sizing of the canvas.

Title: Untitled
Materials: 18 2ftX2ft wood panels, black chalk board paint
After doing much research on St. Augustine, I came to realize that St. George street was always a busy area. Between houses, markets, and shops, the area has always been bustling, no matter the decade. For this installation I chose to look back on the most popular and famous times in St. Augustine's history, as well as the fashions. Starting with the founding of St. Augustine, we see the figure of a Spanish explorer, next we see a gentleman from 1888 when Henry Flagler made St. Augustine a prime destination spot, next we have a woman from the late 50s early 60s, this represents St. Augustine's large part in the civil right movement and the political racism within the town. Finally we have an image that represents today, with modern fashions and over 450 years of history in this city. Each box rotates so that one may mix and match the bodies around. The reason for this ability to turn is because every part of the past affects the present day. You make one turn and everything has changed. This piece is reflecting on the past and how every decision created where we are today in time. The piece was located outside The Closet. The location is critical to the piece as it is a prominant clothing store dealing with fashions and relates to the fashions in the installation. The site was also chosen due to its location, near St. George street and the busy areas that are filled with crowds. Cordova street is a pivotal location to get around in St. Augustine, from shops to restaurants to Flagler College. Without this specific site, the installation would lose it's meaning of the history that affects today.

Title: Strained
Materials: various types of paper and fabric dyed with natural ingredients and sewn together
This piece is an extension of my 30 minute indoor installation Stained. It dives deeper into the effect of stained glass but also into the tension of religion. My work utilizes layers and tension from thread to comment on the emotions one can view religion when they are not religious themselves. The stained glass, or here paper, is beautiful, but looking into the details you can see how it is strained in some places with the tight follow the bible religions and the looser areas that have more contemporary thoughts for spirituality. The paper and fabric casts shadows on the wall behind it, showing the darker moments in religion.

30 min outdoor

Title: Untitled  (swing)
Materials: rope, wood, tree
This piece reflects on those who die young. When a child dies, they are forever cemented at that age and time in their life. The boundaries around the tree and see g act as the barriers where the swing could not go further and move onward.

30 min indoor

Title: Stained
Medium: various types of paper dyed with natural ingredients and sewn together
This piece is a sketch for a larger idea. It manipulates the idea if stained glass, something you would often see in churches. Each color and paper causes a shadow onto the wall behind it, making it play with its own surroundings.

Mice and Men

Would you ever kill your best friend if you knew it was better for them than a life in chains or being killed by another? Michael B. Jordan's character in Black Panther said to let him die because he knew death was better than a life in chains, like his ancestors who jumped from boats to avoid being slaves. Is this idea of death over chains considered compassionate killings? Do we pity them to the point where we honestly think death is better than life not free. Many caretakers have murdered their own family members because the act of having to take care of them 24/7 is too much for them. Is that too considered a mercy killing even if the life killed was innocent and not to blame for their condition? Would you want to die over living a life not free? Is life as a slave or imprisoned a fate worse than death? Is this why there are so many in prisons who commit suicide? Is this why those who are caught in acts of treason kill themselves rather than face the penalties of their crimes? What is considered a mercy or compassionate killing verses murder. Where is the line drawn?

Art and Fear

1.       Out of the work I have done this semester, my poetry is the most “me”. This is because it is what I have put the most emotions and experiences of my own life into. It is a direct reflection of myself.
A   A lot of the influences of my work are nature and life experiences. Using nature as a model, I am always able to go outside and find something that inspires me. Life experiences deeply affect my work as I use them as subject matter throughout my work.
3.       Art is a way of communication that anyone can understand. You don’t have to be able to read of speak the same language to understand what the image is trying to convey. It is prevalent because no matter when or where it was made, everyone can understand it and it unites the world.
4.       Art can be made for the individual or an audience. Making art does not need to be made for the world to view, but if it is viewed by the world it can be very impactful. Either way, it is the world around you that inspires the work. People, music, nature, other art, can all inspire more.
5.       I notice that what I think I want to create is never what ends up being made. At the beginning of the semester I wanted to create things that replicated and were inspired by the sky and stars, but I ended making work about myself. My subject matter lays within my own emotions and experiences from life. In my paintings I try to take an abstracted view to represent layers of a person and in my poetry there is a direct relationship between the imagery and word choices and my own life.
6.       I care about the people in my life greatly. I care about who I am as a person and how I got to this point in my life. I care about my dogs and nature.
