Title: Untitled
Materials: 18 2ftX2ft wood panels, black chalk board paint
After doing much research on St. Augustine, I came to realize that St. George street was always a busy area. Between houses, markets, and shops, the area has always been bustling, no matter the decade. For this installation I chose to look back on the most popular and famous times in St. Augustine's history, as well as the fashions. Starting with the founding of St. Augustine, we see the figure of a Spanish explorer, next we see a gentleman from 1888 when Henry Flagler made St. Augustine a prime destination spot, next we have a woman from the late 50s early 60s, this represents St. Augustine's large part in the civil right movement and the political racism within the town. Finally we have an image that represents today, with modern fashions and over 450 years of history in this city. Each box rotates so that one may mix and match the bodies around. The reason for this ability to turn is because every part of the past affects the present day. You make one turn and everything has changed. This piece is reflecting on the past and how every decision created where we are today in time. The piece was located outside The Closet. The location is critical to the piece as it is a prominant clothing store dealing with fashions and relates to the fashions in the installation. The site was also chosen due to its location, near St. George street and the busy areas that are filled with crowds. Cordova street is a pivotal location to get around in St. Augustine, from shops to restaurants to Flagler College. Without this specific site, the installation would lose it's meaning of the history that affects today.
